Wolves 3-4 Manchester United: Kobbie Mainoo’s stoppage-time winner sets the mood in United’s favour

Manchester United salvaged a late 4-3 win against Wolves thanks to an injury-time winner from Kobbie Mainoo.

The visitors were two goals down twice, but Wolves clawed back to level at 3-3 in the dying minutes with goals from Max Kilman and then an injury-time strike from Pedro Neto.

Neto’s 95th-minute strike looked to have helped the home side, only for United to go the other way and pull back the win with a smart goal from 18-year-old Mainoo.

United dominated the first half, creating many chances and having two goals denied. Much of the build-up to the game came from Marcus Rashford, who responded to being dropped from the squad last week by putting United ahead inside five minutes with a brilliant performance.

Rasmus Hojlund then extended United’s lead just after half-time with a header from close range.

A penalty from substitute Pablo Sarabia brought Wolves back into the game with 19 minutes to go, only for Scott McTominay to reply immediately to make it 3-1.

A stunning comeback from Wolves followed, only to be overtaken by Mainoo’s late heroes.

The win pushes United up to seventh in the table. They now host West Ham on Sunday, while Wolves face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

DISCUSSION POINT

In the middle of this game, United may have found their best XI. Tonight’s game will forever be remembered for how it ended, not how it started, but the United team that walked into Molineux tonight may just represent the best combination the Ten Hag has.

The clearly focused Rashford is a key player, and with the dynamic Garnacho on the other side of the ever-increasing Hojlund, United have a solid front three. Bruno Fernandes has free reign to join them with the secure core of Mainoo and Casemiro at the back, and the return of Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw adds another dimension to the left back four.

Whether he can be fit enough to play regularly, and consistent enough to keep getting results, remains to be seen. Throwing away a two-goal lead proved just how difficult United’s task is, but there was also the personal testimony needed to get back to winning ways. Erik ten Hag needs something to impress his employers over the next four months, and with this XI he could be on to something.

Player of the Match – Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United)

It may seem obvious to pick the player who scored the winner, but Mainoo was the calm center in a difficult situation at Molineux tonight. He’s excelling academically in his first season – Gareth Southgate has to write the record – and he’s done well with the aim of making it the best of his career.
