Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Rory McIlroy falls after strong start with Patrick Cantlay, Ludvig Åberg, and Rickie Fowler in contention | Golf news

A hat-trick of bogeys and a two-stroke penalty marred Rory McIlroy’s debut at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am as he posted a first-round 71.

McIlroy got off to a great start on the Spyglass Hill course, making two birdies on the back nine before adding four more birdies to his tally on the first, third, fourth and fifth.

His birdie run took him to the top of the board, McIlroy suffered a bogey at the sixth and followed it up with another bogey at the fifth and seventh to drop to second.

Rory McIlroy made four birdies in five holes as he moved to six-under to top the leaderboard at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

A third bogey in a row at the fourth eighth saw McIlroy drop off the leader board, finishing in 12th with the first round still under way.

Following his round, the Northern Irishman was handed a two-stroke penalty after being assessed a bogey on the seventh hole, which sent him one under par to 40.

Rory McIlroy was given a two-shot penalty on the seventh hole when he made a triple-bogey eight to finish at under-par after the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

“Yeah, he played well the first 14 holes and obviously finished badly,” McIlroy said following his round.

“But mostly, I hit the ball really well. There’s a lot of good stuff in there.

“I had holes six, seven and eight, but I mean other than that, I played really well.

“I feel like my game is really good. I’m hitting good, I feel good around the greens, on the greens.

“It was one of those – I just let it go – I got really good and just let it get away from me those last few holes.”

Belgium’s Thomas Detry birdied the final round to shoot a nine-under 63 at Spyglass Hill and take the lead.

Detry’s birdie on the par-4 18th was his third in a row to cap a six-under 30 on the back nine. It pushed him ahead of Patrick Cantlay, who had made an early start in the afternoon with a bogey-free, eight-under 64 at Spyglass Hill.

The 80 players in the tournament are playing a round together at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill to open the tournament. He will continue at Pebble Beach this weekend without cutting 36 holes while competing for shares of the $20m purse.

France’s Matthieu Pavon – who scored his first win on the PGA Tour last week at the Farmers Insurance Open to qualify – capped the day at Pebble Beach with a seven-under 65, moving him into third place.

Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo (Spyglass Hill) and South Korea’s Si Woo Kim (Pebble Beach) are tied for fourth at six under, and Rickie Fowler (Spyglass Hill) is tied for sixth with Collin Morikawa (Pebble Beach) at five.
