New York City, New York— NYC Health + Hospitals today released the third episode of its new podcast, The Remedy, which features leaders and health care providers from the nation’s largest municipal health care systems. Episode 3: Preparing for the next pandemic Consider how New York City’s public hospital system has consistently responded to the challenges of Ebola, COVID-19, and Mpox while staying ahead of the latest health crises.Host Dr. Michael Shen joins NYC Health + Hospitals’ own physicians PhD.Silas MadadSenior Director, Systemwide Special Pathogens Program, and Dr. Richard James Solway, senior director of emergency management. Together, they discuss how NYC Health + Hospitals is preparing for the next pandemic and keeping New Yorkers safe and healthy. The health system’s role as a city agency and New York City’s primary safety net health system provides a unique voice that no other healthcare podcast can offer. NYC Health + Hospitals’ mission includes the ability to provide care to all patients regardless of their ability to pay; provide patients with exciting new programs, including lifestyle medicine and telemedicine abortion care; and respond to challenges facing New York City, including Covid -19 pandemic, the homelessness crisis and the current immigration crisis. Hosts and guests are both health system employees and have a special perspective on the work they do for patients. The podcast will consist of seven episodes, with a new episode released every two weeks.

Michael S. Shen, MD, is a primary care physician at New York Health + Hospitals/Woodhull and clinical director of Woodhull’s primary care safety net clinic for the homeless. Dr. Shen was recently selected as a Health Affairs Podcast Fellow, creating a three-part series on safety net hospitals. He is also an artist working in watercolor, acrylic, mixed media and digital media.
