New report from CVS Health® highlights future opportunities for community pharmacy

CVS Health/Harris Poll Shows 84% ​​of Consumers Say Pharmacists Play a Key Role in Delivering Health Care to Patients

Many pharmacists want to do more for the community but need more support to do this

Expanded omnichannel services, digital innovation and a strong workforce pipeline are critical to the future of pharmacy services

Woonsocket, Rhode Island, January 17, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — CVS Health® (NYSE: CVS) released today Rx Report: The future of community pharmacy opens the door to healthier communitieswhich outlines the evolution of consumer expectations for community pharmacies and how local pharmacies can continue to add value to the healthcare system, particularly for disadvantaged groups, to help close gaps in care.

The report also highlights the urgent need for sustainable and scalable industry-wide changes, such as operational improvements and digital innovation to better support pharmacy teams behind the counter, as well as the need to inspire more people to choose community pharmacy careers such as pharmacy schools Enrollment rates have declined steadily.

Additionally, the Prescription Drug Report explores how other key changes to the current pharmacy model can be made to address growing pressure on the industry. This includes the recently announced pharmacy reimbursement model, which will change how CVS Pharmacy® is compensated by adjusting reimbursement based on quality services provided and prescriptions filled. Together, these important changes will help create a more durable business model.

Rx reports key findings from CVS Health survey* show:

  • Nearly seven in 10 Americans prefer pharmacies for their health care needs because of their convenient locations and evening and weekend hours.
  • An overwhelming majority of Americans (as high as 90%) believe that a connected digital pharmacy experience enhances the overall patient experience.
  • More than 4 in 10 people of color visit their local pharmacy in person at least a few times a month to discuss their health care needs with a pharmacist.

The future of pharmacy is digital and in-person

Digital tools, such as online prescription tracking, prescription delivery, scheduling appointments or pickups, and paying online or through mobile apps, provide patients with options to receive care at the touch of a button, enhancing but not would displace an important service, the relationship between pharmacists and their patients. At the same time, integrating technology into the pharmacy experience can help improve efficiency behind the counter.

Community pharmacies can help pursue health equity

Pharmacy teams are well-positioned to continue to provide important services such as vaccinations, especially in medically underserved areas or populations. People of color are increasingly trusting their local pharmacists and seeking more affordable and accessible services, which presents an opportunity for community pharmacies to fill the void left by more traditional health care channels.

Next generation pharmacy team

Despite increasing demand for community pharmacy services and opportunities for growth, fewer and fewer people are attracted to the profession. Although 15,000 PharmDs graduate from pharmacy schools each year, enrollment has declined significantly over the years and the profession is grappling with a serious burnout problem. The Rx report highlights the importance and urgency of making community pharmacy a better place to work and providing the next generation of pharmacy students with the tools to succeed.

The Rx report finds that community pharmacy has become an important part of the larger health care system, and the industry is poised to have a greater impact in making health care more accessible, convenient and comprehensive than ever before. The study was conducted online USA As part of the CVS Health Dimensions of Healthcare study. The Harris Poll surveyed 4,007 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, 203 U.S. family/general practitioners and internists, and 202 U.S. retail, hospital and independent pharmacists.The survey is from March 9-20, 2023.
