Golden Eagles take care of business vs Rams | News, Sports, Business

TYRONE – A year ago, Tyrone held a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter against Penns Valley and lost.

On Friday night, the Golden Eagles scored 35 unanswered points and outscored the Rams 35-7 inside Gray Veterans Memorial Field.

It was the fifth straight win for Tyrone, who got big nights from quarterback Ashton Walk and wide receiver Andrew Weaver.

Play of the game: Walk and Weaver connected for the second score of the game on an 83-yard bomb. It was a drive that started at the Eagles’ 3 and led 21-0 with 11:45 left in the first half.

Co-players of the game: Weaver finished the night with five receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Walker was 10-17 through the air for 358 yards and four touchdowns.

Unsung hero: Tyrone senior defensive tackle Braden Ewing was a dominant force for the Eagles’ defensive line. He blew up several Penns Valley running plays and took on two and three blockers at times, allowing his defenders to roam freely.

Most important stat: Tyrone had seven penalties, but only 35 penalty yards. It was 4-for-5 on third down in the first half.

Tyrone coach John Franco: “We played really well in every phase of the game tonight. We knew how tough they (Penns Valley) were. We have great respect for them. We stressed that we have to play 48 minutes all week. These guys are so good. They have great coaching and tough kids. I thought our kids played very well tonight.”

Penns Valley coach Martin Tobias: “Tyrone came out and played a whale of a game. They made great plays tonight. When we got them on third-and-long, they had a big hit over the top. Big games were different. They came out and fired on all cylinders. My hat is off to them.”

Tyrone wide receiver Andrew Weaver: “It was one of my best games, both offensively and defensively. Kudos to Ashton Walk for putting the ball on the money. “

Notable: Walk passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. … Tyrone’s Brady Ronan scored two touchdowns, one running and one receiving. … The Eagles outrebounded Penns Valley in offensive yards in the first half, 231-114. … Penns Valley had just 3 yards passing in the first half.
