Charles Leclerc has signed a contract extension with Ferrari to remain with the team beyond the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Ferrari did not confirm the length of the extension for Leclerc, whose previous contract expired at the end of next season.
Italian media reported in December that Leclerc had agreed to an extension until 2029, but Ferrari’s statement on Thursday only said the 26-year-old Monegasque would stay with the team “beyond the 2024 season”.
“I am happy to know that I will be wearing the suit of Scuderia Ferrari for several more seasons to come,” said Leclerc.
“This team is my second family since I joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2016 and we have achieved a lot together, fighting through thick and thin over the past five years.
“However, I believe that the best is yet to come and I can’t wait for this season to start, to progress and be competitive in every competition.
“My dream is still to win the World Championship with Ferrari and I believe that in the years to come, we will have good times together and make our fans happy.”
Since joining Ferrari in 2019 following his first F1 campaign with Sauber, Leclerc has taken 23 places and five wins, but he has not been able to compete.
After finishing second in the drivers’ championship in 2022, Leclerc ended the season fifth in the season with five podiums but no wins.
“Charles’ relationship with the Scuderia goes beyond the driver and the team, as he has been part of the Ferrari family for eight years,” Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur said.
“His culture and that of our team are complementary so it was natural for us to join forces in expanding our partnership.
“We know him for pushing himself to the limit and we appreciate his ability to fight and win races.
“We are determined to give Charles a winning car and I know that his determination and commitment will help us achieve our goals.”
Leclerc’s Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz is still in talks over a new contract, with the Spaniard’s current deal due to expire at the end of this year.
The announcement comes ahead of the launch of the Ferrari 2024 car, which is scheduled for February 13.
