HAustrians looking for high-quality stylists who will make them feel beautiful and amazing – and in a loving setting – should look no further than Kosmetik Hair Studio in the Galleria. Local power couple Lei and Mika Burgs own an upscale salon and hair salon where they perfectly combine their passion for their craft with their love for each other.

“Lei and I had been in private rooms for many years, and it only made sense for us to pool our money and invest in our own business,” Mika explains of the couple’s joint cosmetics studio.

“It just made more sense,” Lei said. “It was an opportunity to work with my partner and best friend. We are in the same industry and it was easy to combine our individual businesses together.”

The couple’s combined business is a full-service barber and beauty studio that offers a range of services that Mika says allows her clients to feel their best. “We do fades, tapers, shaves, extensions, haircuts, weaves, coloring, natural hair, healthy hair and makeup!” he explains proudly.

Both agree that working together has brought them closer than ever. “We can laugh about the day because we got through it together. It’s nice to see him all day, every day,” says Lei. “I can look up and see him and smile. Many people don’t have that luxury.”

“Lei’s my best friend,” says Mika, “so I never feel like I’m working with my wife. ‘Mummy Love’ always asks us what we’re going to talk about after work, and we always say, ‘A lot!’ we say”.

Although they have found harmony in their work-life balance, the couple explains that it is not always perfect. “There are times when the logistics of the business can be a bit of a headache for us,” Lei said. “When one of us is hot about a certain situation, the other will be cooler – he can diffuse me, and I diffuse him.”

Mika notes that working together creates opportunities to get closer. “One of my favorite parts of working together is when we take a lunch break together,” she says. “These are the best. I can unload and decompress with it.”

Married for over four years, Mika and Lei met through one of Lei’s clients.

“My client was actually a good friend of Mika’s and they introduced us to each other,” Lei explains. “We dated for two years before it was official.”

Lei popped the question on Christmas Eve 2017 while the couple looked at the Christmas lights at Moody Gardens in Galveston. “On November 17, 2019, we got married at the bell tower on 34th Street. Our wedding day was magical and it was definitely the best day of my life,” said Mika.

“Our wedding was like a dream. It was fun, exciting and happened very quickly! I just wanted to enjoy every moment,” adds Lei. Much to Mika’s surprise, Lei suggested they do the process again.

“I said absolutely no!” It was an expensive party!” Mika says with a laugh. “We really enjoyed our tear-jerking ceremony – there was not a dry eye in the house. You were able to feel the love because of hundreds of our closest family and friends who were there.

Their big day plans are complicated when Mika’s wedding dress arrives and turns out to be two sizes too small. The couple opted to make lemonade out of lemonade, starting a fitness journey a few weeks before their wedding that continues to this day.

“In the short termAfter our wedding, Lei and I joined CycleBar Pearland as two of their founding members,” says Micah. “Unfortunately, the studio closed its doors in November, so we’ve since joined the Peloton family and we absolutely love it!”

Fitness plays a particularly important role in the couple’s family life. “Exercising is very important to both of us,” Lei said. “Mika has a family history of her mother and sister both having heart attacks and she’s lost a mother.”

In addition to working out together, the couple enjoys spending time with their dog on their patio, which Lei and her friends work day and night to build for Mika. Their story of balancing romance and working together is an example for those considering going into business with a partner. “Maintain a level of respect for each other’s minds and ideas,” encourages Lei. “Remember, they were your spouse before they were your business partner.”

Mika agrees, but also offers a simple plan for couples considering a business partnership: “Do it! Write it down! Create a vision plan! Pray and watch God’s work!”
