Pigmentation under the eyes is a very common problem and is even more common in the Indian population as even some children have it as early as the age of 2 years. According to experts, the reason for this is multiple.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Prateek Sondhi, MBBS, MD- Dermatology, Consulting Dermatologist at Fixderma Pvt. Ltd., explained, “We Indians are genetically blessed with big eyes. However, large eyes need large sockets and so the eyes tend to sink over time. The second reason is that the skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the body and the first to show signs of aging. The other reasons for pigmentation under the eyes can be allergies, weight gain, genetically colored eyes.’
Suggesting that an eye cream can be the first step in correcting under-eye problems, she explained: “If there are fine lines around the eyes, then an eye cream containing retinol can be beneficial. If you’re prone to allergies or rub your eyes frequently because of itching, then moisturizers and prescription anti-inflammatory medications may be helpful. If the darkness is due to weight gain, then weight loss along with a cream containing retinol may help.”
He added, “The dark color is due to blood leakage and vitamin K is a very effective ingredient. If filler is needed under the eyes, then serums containing hyaluronic acid should be used. For puffiness under the eyes serums containing AGH (Alpha Glucosyl Hesperidin) should be preferred. It is important to apply under eye creams with care. It should be applied very gently preferably with the fingertip and gently spread over the area without rubbing.”
